If you aren’t familiar with one of our most popular products, our Simplicity DC protein skimmers have many great advantages and are becoming increasingly more popular in the marketplace.
In this article, we’re going to specifically review the Simplicity 240DC Protein Skimmer model and how this particular size could be an excellent match for your home aquarium needs.
Size
The Simplicity 240DC Protein Skimmer is a small-to-mid-sized skimmer that fits a variety of aquarium sizes, especially those commonly found in homes. With a lighter load in your reef tank, the 240DC can handle a 240-gallon system. For medium loads, we find the sweet spot for this model to be about 180 gallons. And for the heaviest loads, we recommend 120-gallons maximum.
Design
The Simplicity 240DC Protein Skimmer’s needle wheel impeller is great at creating perfect micro bubbles to gather up tank pollutants. In addition, the model’s hybrid cone design allows for lots of contact time between the water and air. This helps further concentrate the foam as it rises up the neck.
DC Pump

There are many advantages to having a DC, or direct current pump. For one, DC pumps use less electricity, making them more efficient. Additionally, they’re quieter and sound quite different than the noise you may be accustomed to hearing with an AC pump. We’ve been told by some of our customers that they prefer the sound of a DC pump for those reasons, but we suppose it’s ultimately up to one’s own personal preference (although we certainly won’t argue with that!).
However, the biggest and most notable advantage of the DC pump is that it’s much easier to regulate than an AC pump. It’s more feasible to dial in and fine-tune the pump’s operation, which will in turn raise or lower the water to air ratio. This will ultimately help you operate the pump at peak efficiency.
Controller
The protein skimmer also includes a controller. This provides a digital readout of current speed and power consumption, which can be very handy for optimization. This allows you to control the flow at a desired speed that works best for your tank.

Collection Cup
The collection cup has both a bayonet-style locking mechanism as well as a built-in drain. We’ve designed our collection cups to be easier to manage than others available on the market.
Easy Maintenance
With a thumbscrew assembly, our skimmer makes it really easy to disassemble whenever you need to clean and maintain. The transparent body of the model consists of high-quality cast acrylic designed for durability.
Why Choose the Simplicity 240DC Protein Skimmer?
We chose to specifically highlight the Simplicity 240DC Protein Skimmer this week because of it’s versatility, and this is ultimately what makes it one of our most popular skimmer models. Most aquarists find it to be an appropriate size for their tanks at home. We also think you may be pleasantly surprised at just how efficient this little skimmer can operate!
As one of our most popular DC skimmers, our customers find the 240DC to be relatively quiet, efficient, as well as easy to assemble and maintain over time. In addition to the 240DC, Simplicity also offers other various sizes you may want to look into, including the 120DC, 320DC, 540DC as well as the 800DC.
